Summary

As the chief forensic anthropologist for the FBI’s Chicago field office, Christine Prusik has worked her fair share of bizarre cases。 Yet this one trumps them all: a serial killer is strangling young women and dumping their bodies in the steep, forested ravines of southern Indiana。

With each victim, the killer leaves a calling card: a stone figurine carved like the spirit stones found among the primitive tribes of Papua New Guinea — the same tribes from whom Prusik narrowly escaped a decade earlier while doing field research。 The similarity is eerie and, frankly, terrifying; Prusik still carries the scars from the tribesmen’s attack。 But is the connection real? Or have the dark details of Prusik’s nightmares finally wormed their way into her waking life?

Displaying the expertise of a veteran writer, debut novelist Lloyd Devereux Richards skillfully builds layers of psychological suspense and terror into a compulsively readable whodunit。

This book was absolutely amazing。 I found it through tik tok, when the author’s daughter posted a video stating how Lloyd Richards worked on the book for 14 years。 You can tell he worked hard on it from how well written it is。 Finished it within 2 days。 This is the type of book that makes you want to keep reading。

join the bandwagon。。。。。。read the news story on CNN about his daughter bringing this book to the attention of her TikTok following。 Thought I would give it a read, and was not disappointed。 Congratulations on the secondary success。

I was immediately skeptical of this book since it came recommended to me via Book Tok。 But it proved to be one of my favorite crime thriller reads since reading Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects。 Our protagonist embodies the classic trope of the female FBI agent with a dark and mysterious past - but to me, her character felt fresh。 The murders in this novel’s namesake are disturbingly bizarre。 I devoured this book - no pun intended - and you will, too。

I don’t know what to think about this one, an interesting lil murder mystery, but pretty boring。 This book was overly descriptive and I felt like the actual stabby parts of the book were lacking。 I also don’t like romance, in general, but particularly in my thriller books, it feels unnecessary but ahh well。 I found this book on a Facebook post about TikTok so it’s making me feel a little out of touch but I’m glad that the authors getting his book more widespread。

TikTok made me do it!Saw the vid about this book, saw the many reviews, saw it was available on KU, and thought, hey, why not。Yeah。 Mixed bag。Read my status updates for more info。 This was good in parts, and dumb in others, and practically unbelievable in others still。 Great writing, for sure。 Vivid, descriptive, engaging。Stupid heroine, misogynistic FBI agents, with lots of what seems to be false information。 Are forensic anthropologists also FBI field agents? Do we really want to believe that said special agent routinely pops Xanax while on a case? What self-respecting special agent leaves her service weapon at home while hunting down a serial killer without a real plan? And why the hell is there a budding romance included while hunting down a serial killer? Is that because the special agent is female and just broke up with her previous boyfriend/boss? And thus desperate, I assume? Presumably this book had a fact checker? Perhaps not。Haven't read a thriller in years, so maybe my expectations were way off。 3 stars, generously。 。。。more

I found out about this one on tik tok and it was actually really good! It's not something I usually go for and there were some pretty graphic scenes that scwicked me out a bit, but it was a page turner。 If you like tv shows like Bones or Criminal Minds, you'll like this one。 The beginning was very procedural and text heavy (all necessary text, but I had to kind of wade through it at first), then it becomes action packed as they (and you as the reader) try to solve the mystery。 I found out about this one on tik tok and it was actually really good! What a horrible extraordinarily unextraordinary narrator。 She really ruined the book that already was very easy to foreshadow and was VERY frustrating。 Woman in power has no power through the entire book。 She is the best in her field but no one listened to her till the very end。。。。。like, alright then。 Books like this make me so upset。 All in all, it wasn't bad at all, but definitely, the thrill was taken out of this thriller due to writing, narration, and no wonder of what will happen。 Also, we What a horrible extraordinarily unextraordinary narrator。 She really ruined the book that already was very easy to foreshadow and was VERY frustrating。 Woman in power has no power through the entire book。 She is the best in her field but no one listened to her till the very end。。。。。like, alright then。 Books like this make me so upset。 All in all, it wasn't bad at all, but definitely, the thrill was taken out of this thriller due to writing, narration, and no wonder of what will happen。 Also, we were told multiple times in slow enunciation that SHE DIDN'T RESEARCH IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA。 Calm down, Christine - we KNOW。。。。。we know。Hopefully, the next book has more pizzazz。Booktok totally let me down this time。 Also, the narrator needs to learn some emotion and how to actually express what she reads。 Total boo 👎 。。。more

2。5 stars rounded up。 This was…meh…ok, I guess。 I got swept into it thanks to BookTok, and this is the 2nd dud (of 2) that I’ve read courtesy of BookTok。 Guess this means that much like New York Times Bestsellers, I need to stay far, far away from its recommendations。Kudos to the author and daughter for sticking with it, but I just didn’t click with the story or any of the characters。 The writing was rough and could have been polished up a bit more。 It definitely read like it was written by a bo 2。5 stars rounded up。 This was…meh…ok, I guess。 I got swept into it thanks to BookTok, and this is the 2nd dud (of 2) that I’ve read courtesy of BookTok。 Guess this means that much like New York Times Bestsellers, I need to stay far, far away from its recommendations。Kudos to the author and daughter for sticking with it, but I just didn’t click with the story or any of the characters。 The writing was rough and could have been polished up a bit more。 It definitely read like it was written by a boomer trying to be relevant in the early 2010s but still being very formal, so failing and just making a mess of it。 。。。more

I wanted to like it, but man I just didn’t。 On a human to human level I’m glad this author’s hard work is paying off and all, but from a strictly business standpoint this book is not good。 It had a lot of potential but was poorly written, poorly researched, and by 70% I was desperate to finish just so I didn’t have to read any more。 The main character was unbearable and her backstory made me roll my eyes so hard I didn’t think they’d come back around to the front。 There were some good bits, but I wanted to like it, but man I just didn’t。 On a human to human level I’m glad this author’s hard work is paying off and all, but from a strictly business standpoint this book is not good。 It had a lot of potential but was poorly written, poorly researched, and by 70% I was desperate to finish just so I didn’t have to read any more。 The main character was unbearable and her backstory made me roll my eyes so hard I didn’t think they’d come back around to the front。 There were some good bits, but they were few and far between and overshadowed by bad dialogue and inconsistencies。 No more, please no more。 。。。more

Wow! Just wow!I am an avid reader, I read all the time when I’m not working。 I have read more crime novels than I can ever remember。 This book BLOWS ME AWAY! I have tried to read so many that got good or great reviews on Amazon and couldn’t even finish them。 This one had me hooked from the first page until the last。 I kept thinking it had the same draw as one I am confident everyone knows - Silence of the Lambs。 It is THAT good, and would make a great movie, too!

Chelle Faery

Wow!! So glad I stumbled upon this!I loved the pace of this book。 I am hoping the author continues with another story。 This book had lots of intrigue and definitely kept my attention。 Loved the detail put into the story。

I admire the author for his diligence in finishing this book。 I believe it took 14 years working part time。 When the book wasn't selling well, his daughter promoted it on Tik Tok, and sales skyrocketed! I found the book by reading the article about Richards' daughter's efforts。 I did enjoy the book though I felt it dragged a bit at times and could have been a bit shorter。 Still a good read, and I look forward to to more books from this author。 I admire the author for his diligence in finishing this book。 I believe it took 14 years working part time。 When the book wasn't selling well, his daughter promoted it on Tik Tok, and sales skyrocketed!
